Understanding Meditation
By: Nachiketa Mishra
Meditation is the art of increasing concentration. You must have observed what happens when you concentrate the sun rays through a magnifying glass on a piece of paper. It flames or smokes and chars out. Now, sunlight was present even before. So, what is so special that happened when you focused it with a magnifying glass is that you concentrated the sun rays, thus increasing their intensity at a single point. It is the same thing that happens to your mind when you meditate. While meditating, you concentrate your mind on a single point, object or thought. Though difficult to practice at the beginning, practice enables you to concentrate for longer durations. Now, you may tend to ask about the relation between meditation and fitness. It is quite subtle, though, once you peep carefully, it will be quite eminent to you.
After good research, meditation has been found to reduce the airway constriction of asthma, help to manage chronic pain, lower cholesterol, reduce digestive problems, speed healing and boosts the immune system. These symptoms, at least the most of them, are worsened by anxiety and stress. Meditation significantly controls high blood pressure at levels comparable to widely used prescription drugs, and without the side effects of drugs. Meditators are able to reduce chronic pain by more than 50%, while increasing daily function and markedly improving their moods, even 4 years after the completion of an 8-week training course. 75% of long-term insomniacs who have been trained in relaxation and meditation can fall asleep within 20 minutes of going to bed. Meditation is helpful in reducing many other mental and emotional difficulties. Meditation is also known to provide help for anger management, depression, compulsive behaviors and even addiction. Many people have found it easier to leave a bad habit after taking meditation classes or practicing it personally. Meditation generally does all this by pacifying the mind and calming down the circulation. Those with a high blood pressure complain must try it. Its efficiency to reduce tension is excellent in blood pressure management.
Meditation can be of many different types. Although all of them seem to have fitness benefits, some of them are more lasting than others. Towards the east, the meditation method seeks to vacate your mind of all thoughts and emotions. Some believe it as a temporary technique to attain fitness, whereas, for some, it is contending.
Another meditation technique developed by Roy Masters does not ask you to empty your mind from emotions by totally abandoning them. Rather, this technique demands the understanding of your emotions, thoughts and feelings. This method is known to nurture your understanding of the thoughts.
Meditation is though not very easy, yet a simple and harmless way to improve your fitness. You may practice the meditation that you find the most suitable. It is not exactly what way you meditate that matters. It is actually that how deep you can go into it. 75% of long-term insomniacs who have been trained in relaxation and meditation can fall asleep within 20 minutes of going to bed.
